Keynote Session with Dr. Kevin L. Henry Jr.

Kevin Lawrence Henry, Jr. is an award-winning scholar of race, racism, and education policy and practice. Dr. Henry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the co-author with Colleen Capper of the forthcoming Organizational Theory for Equity and Diversity, 2nd Edition (Routledge) and co-editor with Kevin Clay of The Promise of Youth Anti-Citizenship: Race and Revolt in Education (University of Minnesota Press), as well as co-editor with Shameka Powell of the forthcoming Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Social Justice in Education, Volume 1: Race and Ethnicity. His research has been supported by the Spencer Foundation and the William T. Grant Foundation. Prior to returning to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Henry served on faculty at the University of Arizona in the College of Education and was a founding member of and policy fellow in the Education Policy Center.

The Brincadas Project at PUC-SP uses collective play as a transformative pedagogical tool to foster equity, belonging, and student engagement. Rooted in Vygotskian theory and multiliteracies, it promotes creativity, collaboration, and agency through playful, experiential learning. This session explores how play-based strategies create inclusive spaces, enhance student well-being, and drive institutional transformation. Participants will analyze case studies, reflect on their contexts, and gain practical insights for integrating play into higher education. Dive into meaningful discussions with authors during Books, Bites, and Dialogue at the THRIVE Conference. This interactive one-hour session offers a chance to explore themes of belonging, resilience, and identity through dialogue with the editors of Black Motherscholarship Within and Beyond the Academy: Reconceptualizing Radical Futurity, Dr. Crystasany Turner and Dr. Meghan Green, who amplify the voices and experiences of Black mother scholars. Dr. Keymani Alford, author of Oakland Hills, Milwaukee Rivers, will share his inspiring memoir about overcoming adversity and embracing transformation. Contributors to Belonging in Higher Education, including Dr. Jimmy Cheffen and Dr. Robert B. Caldwell, will also discuss their powerful counter/narratives about fostering deep belonging in academia.
